What is Cannabidiol (CBD) – All You Need To Know From Scratch!

WHAT IS Cannabidiol (CBD)?

CBD short for Cannabidiol is a naturally occurring compound which is derived from Cannabis sativa plant. CBD is prominent for its potential health giving benefits.  This liquid extract of Cannabis plant is non-psychoactive and exhibits no effects and indication of ‘high’ or ‘euphoria’ unlike its cousin THC (TETRAHYDROCANNABIDIOL) or commonly known as marijuana which is well known among its consumer for its abusive effect.

WHAT IS CANNABIS?

Cannabis is a herbaceous plant with two main classifications- Indica and Sativa. Both of these cannabis plants are truly separate species in matter of debate.  Sativa is known for its therapeutic benefits and for reducing stress and anxiety while indica is used for full body effects, such as deep relaxation and curing insomnia.  Marijuana and hemp are the constituents of these plant genus; hemp is a member of cannabis sativa and marijuana belongs to cannabis indica. Therefore, hemp contains high concentrations of non- psychotomimetic CBD oil which carries little to no traces of THC (0.3%).

WHAT IS MARIJIUANA?

Marijuana-also called weed, pot, ganja, Mary Jane refers to dried leaves, stem, seeds and flowers of cannabis indica plant. The main mind altering chemical responsible for its relaxing, high and euphoric and other psychoactive properties is THC (TETRAHYDROCANNABIDIOL).  Marijuana can have up to 30% THC dry per weight. It is commonly abused drug in The United States mostly spread among young people.  In 2015, more than 11 million young adults ages 18 to 25 used marijuana in past year even though it remains federally illegal in many statesPeople smoke marijuana in hand rolled cigarettes, pipes or other vaporizing devices. It has both long term and short term effect on brain.   When a person inhales its smoke THC quickly passes from the lungs to the blood streams. The blood then carries in to the brain and other organs.  Generally a person will feel its affects in 20 minutes or in an hour. THC acts on a specific cell receptors that commonly reacts to these chemicals. Marijuana hyperactive these receptors that causes the high feeling other effects include:
  • Delusions
  • hallucinations
  • changes in mood
  • weakened memory
  • no sense of time
  • seeing bright colors
  • Impaired body movements.

CBD VS THC

Chemical structures:
  • Both CBD cannabidiol and THC tetrehydrocannabioil share the exact same molecular formula, C21H30O2, containing twenty-one atoms of carbon, thirty of hydrogen and two of oxygen.
  • Our body makes our own cannabidiol receptors known as (endocannabinoids) both of these chemical interact with it.

Psychoactive compound:

Unlike THC, CBD does not contain psychoactive components which expresses that it does not produce “high” feeling.  CBD is completely safe to use for medical purposes and it does not changes persons state of mind however it does perform significant changes in body and brain which has 100% medical benefits. The human body contains its own cannabinoids,  CB1 which is present throughout the body but most of them reside in brain and CB2 which is responsible for regulating our immune system and reduces anti flammatory and anti-cancer effects. CBD works by directing the body to use more of its cannabinoids while THC over activates them.

LEGALITY:

Illinois will became the 11th state in USA to legalize marijuana for its recreational and purely medical purposes on January 1, 2020. In 2016 four states California, Nevada, Maine, Massachusetts got board with legal recreational weed. However, (the law does not allow the residents to buy it from anywhere but they can grow it) still in many states marijuana remains illegal. In june 2018, FDA (THE FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION) approved EPIDIOLEX and ARVISOL, the first prescription of pure form of CBD which is used to treat rare elipsy.  Ultimately, the farm bill legalizes hemp, which would be a highly regulated crop in US for both personal and industrial production

HOW DOES CBD WORKS?

CBD mainly acts on the receptors CB1 and CB2 which are located through tout the body but mostly in our brain. It does not bind directly but influence on our body indirectly.  CBD can also increase Anadamide or simply known as the ‘bliss molecule’. Anadamide plays a active role in neural generation of pleasure and motivation. By stimulating our endocannabnoids CBD help promotes homeostasis, reduces pain sensation and decreases inflammation.  While THC has strong effect on both CB1 and CB2 receptors CBD has no particular blinding affinity. According to National Institute of Health operating the endocannabinoid system by introducing exterior cannabidiods like CBD can actually be quite useful for treating various medical aliments.

ANXIETY:

People with depression or anxiety issues tend to takes various sedative, medicines and tablets but all of this medication comes with chronic side effects.   Doctors and health experts prescribe different tranquilizers and dosage of drugs which comes with serious addictiveness and substance abuse People with an anxiety disorder are three to five times more likely to go to the doctor and six times more likely to be hospitalized for psychiatric disorders than those who do not suffer from anxiety disorders.  There have been different types of human and animal experiments and studies proved that CBD can reduce anxiety and depression in a matter of weeks.

EPILEPSY:

Small clinical and early evidence from numbers of laboratory studies, reports and experiments potentially suggested that CBD can help control seizures. Research on CBD was hard and had taken time due to limited access to cannabis plant. But in recent years numbers of studies have proved the benefits of specific naturally occurring plant of CBD in treating batches of people with epilepsy who have not acknowledge to traditional therapies.  In an expanded access program and other compassionate use programs, 161 people with Dravet syndrome and LGS were treated with Epidiolex, including 109 people treated for more than 6 months.

CHRONIC PAIN:

In ancient china CBD was used as a natural remedy for all kinds of chronic pain. Its miraculous pain management had help ease people with severe back pain and arthritis.  Moreover CBD is potentially effective for relieving
  • Neuropathic pain
  • Cancer pains
  • Arthritis
  • Fibromyalgia
In 2016, experts and researchers did experiments on rats with arthritis; they applied CBD gel on rats with varying dosage of 0.6 mg to 62.3 mg for four days in a row.  on the last day of the experiment the group of rat with the least dosage had no obvious side effects and the group of rat with 62.3 mg had reduced the over inflammation and swelling. National cancer institute (NCI) pointed CBD as a possible option for reducing chemotherapy side effects such as
  • Vomiting
  • Insomnia
  • Constant pain
  • Lack of appetite.
Experts and scientist also discovered earlier this year that CBD can alone actually relive chronic pain. An animal study in pain explored how CBD interact with serotonin receptors, which are known to play role in pain depression and anxiety.

PARKINSONS DISEASE:

Parkinson disease is a neurological disorder which directly impact your nervous system. CBD with its strong therapeutic benefits can help with the symptoms of Parkinson disease and help improve pain.  A small study in 2009 stated that 22 individual with PD were given CBD and in a matter of weeks it helped ease muscle movement and 50% of people who dealt with hallucinations and delusions claimed that it cured their psychosis.  Numerous studies echoes CBDs benefits. Researchers in Brazil stated “our findings point to a possible effect of CBD in improving quality of life measure in PD patients with no psychiatric disorders.” https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18801821.

ALCOHOL ADDICTION :

Alcohol is mainly taken for its relaxation and eases the muscles.  CBD creates similar relaxation and works great as a healthy alternate version for alcohol. It protect against alcoholic side effects and prevent the negative effects on the body.  In a study years ago some researchers injected CBD in alcohol addicted rat it found that CBD reduced alcohol addiction and prevented relapse and decrease the motivation to have alcohol.  In humans the research is limited but in a study it showed that 24 smokers were to receive an inhaler of CBD or placebo for one week, they were instructed to use the inhaler when they felt the urge to smoke.  Over the treatment week, placebo treated smokers showed no differences in number of cigarettes smoked. In contrast, those treated with CBD significantly reduced the number of cigarettes smoked by ~40% during treatment.  Results also indicated some maintenance of this effect at follow-up.  These preliminary data, combined with the strong preclinical rationale for use of this compound, suggest CBD to be a potential treatment for nicotine addiction that warrants further exploration.

MISCONCEPTIONS AND MYTHS ABOUT CBD

CBD GETS YOU “HIGH”

People often relate CBD with marijuana which works completely opposite to it.  The psychoactive component in the cannabis include THC which gives you the ”euphoria” or “high” feeling unlike CBD which promotes relaxation and overall health.  CBD does have a positive effect on the brain. It help people with anxiety and other neurological disorders caused by THC.

ALL CBD YOU USE IS THE SAME

The biggest and the most common misconception about CBD is that all kind of cannabidiol is the same. Just like other CBD products manufacturers could vary widely.  CBD goes through a long process of growing, extraction, purifying, string and packaging various manufacturers have different protocols for the production.  Cannabis that grows in different region of the world may be exposed to different compounds of the soul which may or may not reduce the effectiveness of the product and can also have a major impact on its concentrations.

CBD HAVE NOT BEEN SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN

CBD disputers often state that the component hasn’t been proven to help with any health conditions. They usually say along the lines of “There’s some indication CBD might be useful in treating a few conditions, but there’s little solid evidence.”  Recently in 2018  FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTATION (FDA) https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-approves-first-drug-comprised-active-ingredient-derived-marijuana-treat-rare-severe-forms approved the first drug comprised of the active ingredient from marijuana to treat carious kinds of health diseases. Epidiolex (CBD) , the first FDA approval of a drug for the treatment of patients with Dravet syndrome.
  • 2018 studyTrusted Source from the United Kingdom stated miraculous results using CBD in treating ulcerative colitis.
  • 2014 study from Italy suggested that CBD inhibits the growth of cancerous cells in people with colon cancer.
  • 2017 studyTrusted Source from Brazil found that a group of people who took CBD had less anxiety around public speaking than the control group, or the participants who took a placebo.

POTENTIAL RISK

The majority of CBD users did not experienced any negative effects. An article published in the pediatrics journal by American academy of pediatrics (AAP) warns pregnant women about the possible effects of CBD use might cause an impact on their baby. It is recommended to consult with your doctor first by using CBD oil products Other risks may include
  • Drowsiness
  • Fatigue
  • Changes in appetite or weight

CBD OIL DOSAGE:

The good news is that CBD is 100% safe and risk-free!  CBD oil only has minimal to no side effects. There is not a single case stated of overdose of CBD. The most persistent users of CBD take up to 10 to 20 mg  1-2 times daily. This dosage is enough to provide you with maximum cannabidiol effects. In any way you may want to start with small dose. Some studies use a low CBD oil dosage of 2mg to 3mg per day with a maximum of 10 mg. but it is always better to to your doctor or consultant first before taking any medication. You may also want to keep an eye on how long does CBD effects lasts.
